Tirelli Gallenga Por Fendi Screen Printed Black Velvet Pouch Circa 80s

1980s rare Fendi velvet pouch bag with cord strap finished with gold metal lace edging and silk tassel with murano bead finish. Limited edition production by Tirelli Gallenga for Fendi using Gallenga's traditional textile printing design and techniques.

Maria Monaci Gallenga was an admirer and contemporary of Mariano Fortuny and is known for the particular technique of textile printing she invented, which consisted in the use of wooden matrices on which a glue was applied before being pressed onto the fabric, on which was then distributed a powder of metallic pigments in gold and silver. This way, one colour blended into the other, obtaining an effect that made the fabric look hand-painted rather than printed.

Italian Tailor, costume designer and historical fashion collector Umberto Tirelli was a big admirer Gallenga’s work and, over the years, he bought through the designer’s son an entire wardrobe, plus various objects of interior design, drawings, her patent for printing on fabrics and thousands of wooden blocks and moulds.

The Gallenga textile printing system allowed Tirelli to make some of the most beautiful costumes for films, ballet and theatre. The Fendi sisters,  good friends of Tirelli, discovered Gallenga at his studio and collaborated with him printing velvets for a limited edition collection of evening bags that was produced in the 1980s - once of which is for sale here.
