Chloé Karl Lagerfeld Era S/S 1994 Daphnis and Chloe Print Silk Dress

Sleeveless a-line cut, front neck opens down to just under the chest and is closed by special white buttons that depict a ancient greek head, shaped to look handmade or perhaps like a coin.

The nude figures in this print represent Daphis and Chloe - characters from the ancient Greek pastoral novel of the same name. The story of Daphnis and Chloe was a persistent theme in art right up to the romantic period, depicting a natural uncontaminated tragic love. This print also references the erotic scenes found in frescoes.

This collection was inspired by ancient Greece, the garments shapes all recall the simplicity of tunics, himations and chitons. For colour inspiration Lagerfeld turned to the faded frescoes found in the ruins of temples.

Karl Lagerfeld described this collection as being 'modern romantic with a greek inspiration.'
