Black lace winds around the skirt. Side invisible zip. Pleat in centre back.
From McQueen's 'No. 13' collection, named as it was his 13th collection; this collection was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and explored the dichotomies of man and machine, craft and technology.
'No. 13' was the collection McQueen said was "the only one that actually made me cry".
Worn on the catwalk by Paralympic athlete Aimee Mullens. The skirt was paired with carved cherry wooden prosthetic legs the work of the Dutch-British sculptor and wood-carver, Grinling Gibbons.
McQueen famously guest-edited the September 1998 issue of Dazed & Confused magazine which came out only days before No. 13 was staged and put Aimee Mullins on the cover, shot by Nick Knight and styled by his then creative director, Katy England. In an interview for The Guardian covering both projects, Mullins said she was keen to be involved in the projects because it was her ‘mission’ to challenge prevailing attitudes towards beauty.
